‘Light Leaders’ was a fortnight long drop-down project for Year 5 and 6 children across Bishop’s Primary. Each class teacher chose an individual who has changed the world as the focus for their project. For Year 5, this individual had to have changed the world through science or technology, whereas for Year 6, the individual changed the world of discrimination and civil rights. The question posed to each class was how has your individual affected the world we live in today.
During the fortnight, Year 6 class were treated to a workshop from Mrs Taylor on ‘Justice’ and Augusto Boal’s ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ which looked at the idea of forum theatre and the discrimination Augusto Boal aimed to counteract.
To celebrate the end of the project, a Light Leaders Day was held for Year 5 on Thursday 27th June. Here, every Year 5 pupil visited Josephine Butler Primary where they took part in a variety of activities. The morning featured a carousel of activities where children learnt something about the individuals the other classes had studied. After lunch, a celebration assembly was held where classes led presentations for their Year 5 peers. Here classes impressed with their knowledge of their individuals and wider ideas of change regarding science and technology.
A great day was had by all involved, with children gaining a superb insight into important individuals who have shaped our world.
